Naalehu Summary

Naalehu is a small unincorporated community located in the Kaʻu district of the Big Island of Hawaii. It is the southernmost town in the United States. The population was 862 at the 2010 census.

History

The area of Naalehu was first settled by Polynesian voyagers in the late 1700s. The first Europeans to visit the area were Captain Cook and his crew in 1779. The area was then settled by missionaries in the early 1800s. The town was officially founded in 1856 and was named after the nearby Naalehu stream.
In the late 1800s, the town became a major sugarcane production center. The sugarcane industry was the main source of income for the town until the early 1900s when the industry began to decline. The town then shifted to ranching and farming.

Geography

Naalehu is located on the southern coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. It is situated at an elevation of about 1,000 feet (305 m) above sea level. The town is located on the slopes of Mauna Loa and is surrounded by lush tropical rainforest.
The climate in Naalehu is tropical and humid. The average temperature is around 75°F (24°C). The average annual rainfall is around 50 inches (127 cm).

Economy

The economy of Naalehu is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several farms and ranches that produce coffee, macadamia nuts, and other crops.
