Keaau Summary

Keaau is a small unincorporated community located in the Puna District of Hawaii County, Hawaii. It is located on the eastern side of the Big Island, about 20 miles south of Hilo. The population of Keaau was estimated to be 2,845 in 2019.

History

Keaau was originally a small agricultural village, with its first settlers arriving in the late 1800s. The area was primarily used for growing sugar cane, and the first sugar mill was built in the area in 1883. The mill was destroyed by a hurricane in 1887, but was rebuilt and continued to operate until the early 1900s.
In the early 1900s, the area began to be developed for residential use. The first subdivision was built in the area in 1912, and the first post office was established in 1914. The area continued to grow, and by the 1950s, Keaau had become a thriving community.

Geography

Keaau is located on the eastern side of the Big Island, about 20 miles south of Hilo. The area is mostly rural, with a few small residential neighborhoods. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills. The climate is tropical, with temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to the mid-80s.
