History

Valdosta was founded in 1860 by European-American settlers who named the city after the nearby plantation of George S. Tift, who was from Valdosta, Georgia. The city was incorporated in 1871 and was the first city in Lowndes County. The city was a major railroad hub during the late 19th century and early 20th century. The city was also the site of a major battle during the Civil War in 1864.

The city has a total area of 24.2 square miles, of which 24.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
