Maxeys Summary

Maxeys is a small town located in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, United States. It is situated along the banks of the Oconee River, approximately 10 miles south of Athens. The town was founded in 1883 and named after the Maxey family, who were early settlers in the area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Maxeys was 545.

History

The area that is now Maxeys was originally inhabited by the Creek Indians. In the early 1800s, the Creek Indians were forced to cede their land to the United States government in the Treaty of Indian Springs. The land was then opened up to white settlers, and the Maxey family was among the first to arrive. The town was officially founded in 1883 and named after the Maxey family.

In the late 1800s, Maxeys was a thriving agricultural community. Cotton was the main crop, and the town was home to several cotton gins and a cotton mill. The town also had a sawmill, gristmill, and a brickyard.

In the early 1900s, Maxeys began to decline as the cotton industry moved away from the area. The town was further impacted by the Great Depression and World War II. In the 1950s, the town began to experience a resurgence as the poultry industry moved into the area.

Maxeys is located in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, approximately 10 miles south of Athens. The town is situated along the banks of the Oconee River. The town has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of which is land.
