History

Franklin Springs was founded in 1820 by the Reverend John Franklin, a Methodist minister. The town was named after him and was originally known as Franklin's Springs. The town was incorporated in 1891.

The economy of Franklin Springs is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several small businesses, including a feed mill, a sawmill, and a furniture factory.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 776 housing units at an average density of 645.2 per square mile (249.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.45% White, 17.90% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.08% from other races, and 1.31% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.20% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.13.
