Sun City Center Summary

Sun City Center is a census-designated place located in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. It is located south of Tampa and north of Sarasota. The population was 19,258 at the 2010 census.

History

Sun City Center was founded in 1961 by Del Webb, a real estate developer from Arizona. The community was designed to be a retirement community for seniors. The first residents moved in during 1962 and the community quickly grew. By the 1970s, Sun City Center had become one of the largest retirement communities in the United States.

Geography

Sun City Center is located at 27°45'25" North, 82°20'17" West (27.756944, -82.338333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (1.17%) is water.

Economy

Sun City Center is a retirement community and as such, the economy is largely based on the services and amenities that cater to the needs of the elderly population. There are several medical facilities, including a hospital, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities. There are also a variety of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses that cater to the needs of the elderly population.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 17,421 people, 8,717 households, and 5,845 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,097.3 people per square mile (809.7/km2). There were 10,845 housing units at an average density of 1,312.3/sq mi (505.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.90% White, 0.50% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.63% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 0.58% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.17% of the population.
There were 8,717 households, out of which 8.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.2% were married couples living together, 5.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 19.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.99 and the average family size was 2.36.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 8.2% under the age of 18, 2.2% from 18 to 24, 11.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 50.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 71 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $35,945, and the median income for a family was $41,945. Males had a median income of $30,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $22,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
