The town was named after the nearby Ocoee River. The town was incorporated in 1922 and was originally a farming community.
In 1920, the city was the site of the Ocoee Massacre, one of the largest incidents of racial violence in the United States. On November 2, 1920, a white mob attacked African-American residents of the city, killing two and injuring many more. The violence was sparked by the attempted voting of an African-American man, Mose Norman.
