Gretna Summary

Gretna is a small town located in Gadsden County, Florida, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Ochlockonee River, about 20 miles (32 km) west of Tallahassee. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Gretna is located at 30°37'25" North, 84°37'25" West (30.623607, -84.623607). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

History

Gretna was founded in 1825 by settlers from Georgia. The town was named after Gretna Green, Scotland, where runaway couples traditionally eloped. The town was incorporated in 1887.

Economy

Gretna is a small town with a limited economy. The town is home to a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. The town is also home to a few small manufacturing companies.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 690 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 617.2 per square mile (238.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 57.2% White, 40.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.3% were married couples living together, 20.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.20.
