History

The area that is now Darien was originally inhabited by the Siwanoy Native American tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the area in 1641, and the town was officially incorporated in 1820. The town was named after the town of Darien in Scotland.

In the 19th century, Darien was a popular summer resort for wealthy New Yorkers. The town was also home to several large estates, including the estate of William Ziegler, which was later purchased by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bridgeport and is now the site of the Darien Nature Center.

Geography

Darien is located at 41°04'N 73°27'W (41.07, -73.45). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 14.8 square miles, of which 12.9 square miles is land and 2.0 square miles is water.
