Kearny Summary

Kearny, Arizona is a small town located in the southeastern part of the state, about an hour and a half drive from Phoenix. It is situated in the Gila River Valley, and is surrounded by the Gila River Indian Community, the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation, and the Tohono O’odham Nation. The town was founded in 1881 by the Arizona Copper Company, and was named after General Stephen Watts Kearny, a prominent figure in the Mexican-American War.
Kearny is located in the heart of Arizona’s copper mining district, and is home to the Ray Mine, one of the largest copper mines in the world. The town is also home to the Kearny Generating Station, a coal-fired power plant that provides electricity to the surrounding area.
Kearny has a population of approximately 2,500 people, and is a predominantly Hispanic community. The town is served by the Kearny Unified School District, which includes two elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. The town is also home to a branch of the Gila Community College, which offers a variety of courses and programs.
